The Journey…again

Remembering Mary Oliver, and her poem which changed my life…

MEANINGS AND MUSINGS

Graham Greene said,

A story has no beginning or end: arbitrarily one chooses that moment of experience from which to look back, or from which to look ahead.

And so is the narrative of our life. The choice of that moment of experience will colour our future, and the memory of our past.

Which moment of experience defines our past, or will define our future?  Which moments of experience are the reference points for the narrative you call life?

One narrative  which particularly impacts us is our romantic relationships and the commitments we make because of it. It brings to the fore memories, hopes and dreams because of a shared vision.

I came across this poem titled ‘The Journey’ by Mary Oliver which speak to the journey of a relationship.

Man Down, a poem by Kate Tempest

Go to a quiet place, let the words rain on you, contemplate...   Man down Let it be known: no man is entirely alone No man is a man all through. I’ve seen you. Shivering. Fleeting weakness. Cold rain scuffing its feet on the beaches. Young human. You. All feeling, flesh. Brine eyes. Man, but … Continue reading Man Down, a poem by Kate Tempest

Contemporary poetry I commend to you

Lit World Interviews

I have been reading poetry lately, not the Whitman, Cummings or Oliver but of contemporary poets, many of whom shared their creations first on social media before making it to traditional publication.

Who hasn’t heard of New York Times bestselling author, Rupi Kaur with Milk and Honey (2014),  her debut collection of poetry and prose collection of poems, and the recent The Sun and Her Flowers (2017).  Both books address the ebb and flow of life – triumph and loss, joy and hurt, trauma and healing – in essence tracing the universality of the human condition.

Rupi Kaur, Milk and Honey

Then there is the works of Lang Laev, born to Cambodian parents in a refugee camp in Thailand and raised in Sydney. She is the author of 5 collections of poems and prose, the most successful being Lullabies (2014) and Love and Misadventure (2013).  Her other collections include
