We did not lose ourselves because in each moment we were creating ourselves.
Decades of life… every moment, every decision a reflection of that moment. With hindsight, we seek to tell of a past with reference to the past previous to that. We held a vision of ourselves in a previous past, and so that we would not be disloyal to it, we tell of how the immediate past was a “losing” of ourselves and perhaps wrong. We now look back with regret and disappointment.
But it was never that.
Every moment in those pasts, and there were many no matter the reference points. They created the “us” we are now. Can we regret this creation process? Can we be disappointed? Can we blame circumstance or anyone for the decisions we made?
If we do, what are we still holding onto?
If we continue to look back in order to narrate our present, to justify or excuse who we are, then we are missing the present moments and those to come.
Peace comes with an acceptance of what was. Peace comes with an acknowledgement that we can only live this life now.
And with each action, behaviour or thought, every looking-behind or in-the-moment moments we continue to create our future selves.
The future unfolds, in unexpected ways.
And here’s a poem that speaks to me about being lost, and to be Here.
